What is Streetlight Ministries?
Streetlight Ministries is a joint project of the Ancaster Canadian Reformed Church and Fellowship Canadian Reformed Church of Burlington-South. Streetlight Ministries' mission is to bring the gospel of Jesus Christ to the people of downtown Hamilton. It is the aim of STREETLIGHT MINISTRIES to use volunteers from the supporting churches to teach others the glad tidings of God 's grace, to be received by faith alone, for the salvation of all those who repent of their sins and believe that Jesus is Lord of all. (Romans 3:21-26). Presently, this work is being led by a missionary and mission worker, and by a part time evangelist, youth program coordinator, and administrator.
What is Streetlight Ministries' Mandate?
Streetlight Ministries has been mandated by the councils of Ancaster Canadian Reformed Church and Burlington Fellowship Canadian Reformed Church to:
- direct, supervise and support a missionary and mission worker who will share with others the Good News of God's plan for salvation in Jesus Christ and to faithfully fulfill the Christian calling -as prophet, to speak a prophetic word; as priest, to offer oneself as a living sacrifice; and as king, to live a life worthy of the calling of our King and Saviour. (Lord's Day12 of the Heidelberg Catechism)
- design, recommend, implement, and maintain a reporting system
- design and implement a dissemination program that keeps members of our church support community fully informed regarding the project
- stimulate respective congregations to be and remain actively involved with the mission project
- solicit volunteers from the supporting and neighbouring congregations and coordinate their work with the missionary, mission worker, and youth program coordinator
- design, recommend and implement "fund-raising " ventures for the project
- provide and distribute materials suitable for use in the mission project
- develop, recommend and administer a suitable budget for the project
Psalm 96:2,3 - "Sing to the LORD, praise his name; proclaim his salvation day after day. Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples."
Why is Urban Mission Important?
Streetlight Ministries seeks to apply scriptural principles in an organized way. Some key texts in scripture that direct us to seek our neighbour 's salvation are:
Christ's great commission in Matthew 28:18-20,to "make disciples of all nations", and Christ 's instructions to His followers in Acts 1:7-8,"you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and to the ends of the earth". Christ urges us to "let your light shine before men." (Matthew 5:16)
James teaches that faith can never be kept inside us, but must become evident in our lives. For instance, he says, "I will show you my faith by what I do." (James 2:18)
Ps.51:10-13:"Create in me a pure heart...grant me a willing spirit...[T]hen I will teach transgressors your ways..." To carry out this task, the early Christians organized outreach, following Paul 's command in Romans 10:13-15:the message of the gospel is to be preached, and men must be commissioned for this task. In II Tim.4:5, Paul encourages his student to "Do the work of an evangelist"; In Acts 8:4 church members "preached the Word wherever they went".
An urban mission project seeks to not only bring the Gospel message to outsiders, but to strengthen the church. In Ephesians 4:11-13, "Christ appoints some to be evangelists..so that the body of Christ may be built up." In order to do the work of mission, believers must be fully equipped with the armour of God, above all, as the Apostle Paul says, "with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace." (Ephesians 6:14-15) Thus we too may be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks us to give the reason for the hope that we have. (1 Peter 3:15)
How does Streetlight Ministries Carry Out Its Mission?
Streetlight Ministries has a Board whose members are appointed by the supporting Churches. The Board is responsible for overseeing the project, and assisting the present missionary, Pastor Paul Aasman, and mission worker, Hilco de Haan.
How is Streetlight Funded?
Streetlight Ministries is funded by the supporting churches and their individual members, by donations from supporters, by other Canadian Reformed and United Reformed Churches, and by fundraising activities sponsored by the Board. Your support is greatly coveted since Streetlight Ministries relies on your prayers, help as volunteers, and financial aid.
